After a storm: how a local roofer stays the trusted choice

Storms bring a rush of calls and out-of-town crews. How to show you are local and verified, and how to answer fast when every crew is booked.

By New Reward 6 min read

Storm season is when roofing phones ring the hardest. It is also when homeowners are most on guard, because they know not every crew that shows up will still be around next year.

This guide is about being the roofer they trust in that rush. It covers how you look online and how you answer, not how to repair a roof.

How common storm damage is

The Insurance Information Institute publishes claim data from ISO, a Verisk business. For 2019 to 2023, wind and hail claims averaged about 2.8 for every 100 insured homes a year. Water damage and freezing came to about 1.5, and fire and lightning to about 0.2.

In plain words: among those three causes, wind and hail lead by a wide margin. For a roofer, that means storm calls are a steady part of the work, and so is the competition that follows a storm.

What homeowners are warned about

The Federal Trade Commission warns that unlicensed contractors and scammers often show up in recovery zones after a disaster. Its advice to homeowners includes:

  • confirm a contractor’s license with the state or county, and ask for proof of insurance;
  • get estimates from more than one contractor, in writing;
  • get a written contract with no blank spaces;
  • never pay for everything up front, and walk away from anyone who wants cash first.

Every warning on that list is a chance for a local roofer to look different.

Prove you are local

Strengthen your service-area proof. Name the towns you cover and show real jobs in each one, with photos and reviews. Out-of-town crews cannot show a history in your area.

Set up Google the right way. Google’s guidelines say a service-area business should hide its address if customers do not visit it. They also say the service area should stay within about two hours of driving from where you are based.

Keep your details the same everywhere. Your business name, phone and address or service area should match on your site, your profile and every listing.

Prove you are verified

Show your license where your state requires one, your insurance and how your written estimates work. Put them on your site and your profile before the storm, not after it.

Google’s Local Services Ads have a roofing category. Google’s U.S. list for it includes background checks, business registration, general liability insurance and state licenses, each for select advertisers. If you run those ads, keep your papers current. If you do not, the same proof still belongs on your own pages.

Answer fast when every crew is booked

Roofing Contractor’s 2026 State of the Industry report found that 36% of contractors named a lack of qualified workers among their top challenges. When crews are stretched, the office has to work smarter.

  • Text back every missed call. A quick reply holds the caller while you finish the roof you are on.
  • Book inspections online or by text. Fewer phone calls, fewer missed ones.
  • Say how long the wait is. An honest wait time beats silence.
  • Follow up after the inspection. A written estimate and a check-in a few days later keep you in the running.

Ask for reviews that name the work

After each storm job, ask the customer to mention what you did: a replacement, a repair or new gutters. Reply and name the service too. Next season, those reviews show new callers that you have done this work in their neighborhood.

Your checklist

  • Town pages with real local jobs, photos and reviews
  • Google profile set up correctly for a service-area business
  • License, insurance and written estimates shown before storm season
  • Missed-call text back and online inspection booking
  • Honest wait times when the schedule is full
  • Reviews after every storm job that name the work
