What homeowners check before they call a roofer

A 2026 homeowner survey, NRCA advice and the FTC show what roofing buyers look for. How to put each item where they will see it first.

By New Reward 6 min read

A new roof is a big purchase, so homeowners check before they call. They ask around, they look you up, and they compare. Make those checks easy, and you give them a reason to pick up the phone.

How homeowners find a roofer

Roofing Contractor magazine surveyed homeowners about their roofing journey for 2026, with Roofle and MyCLEARInsights Hub. Homeowners named:

How they find roofers Share
Word of mouth 74%
Repeat business with contractors they know 62%
Online search engines 54%

A warm referral can still end with a search for your name. What turns up in that search can make or break the call.

The same survey found that 65% of homeowners are more likely to call a roofer that shows transparent pricing on its website. Roofle, one of the survey partners, sells instant online roof quote software, so weigh that number with care. Even so, a price range or a plain explanation of how you price answers a question every buyer has.

What roofing buyers are told to check

The National Roofing Contractors Association gives homeowners a checklist for selecting a contractor. Among its points:

  • A permanent place of business, with a phone number, a tax identification number and a business license where required.
  • Insurance. Ask for copies of liability insurance and workers’ compensation certificates, in effect for the whole job.
  • A track record. The contractor should readily offer client references and a list of completed projects.
  • A written proposal with complete descriptions of the work, start and completion dates, and payment procedures.
  • Industry membership in a local, regional or national roofing association.
  • Healthy doubt about the lowest bid.

The Federal Trade Commission adds its own advice: confirm a contractor’s license with your state or county, ask for proof of insurance, and get written estimates from more than one contractor.

Turn the checklist into your website

Each item on those lists can live on your site and profile before anyone asks.

An “About us” page that proves you are local. Your address, how long you have worked in the area and the towns you cover.

A proof section. Your license where your state requires one, your insurance, and any association memberships or manufacturer programs you belong to. Offer copies of certificates on request.

A project list. Finished jobs by town and roof type, with photos. This is the “list of completed projects” NRCA tells homeowners to ask for.

How your proposals work. Explain what your written proposal includes, how you set start and finish dates, and how payment works.

How you price. A range, the main things that change a price, or both.

Make reviews do more work

Three in four consumers (74%) told BrightLocal in 2026 that they look for reviews from the past three months. Recent reviews matter. Reviews that name the job also show a buyer proof for a roof like theirs.

  • Ask every customer to mention the work: a full replacement, a leak repair or a storm job.
  • Reply to each review and name the service in your reply.
  • Ask soon after the job, while the new roof is still the talk of the house.

Your checklist

  • A local address and the towns you cover, on your site and profile
  • License, insurance and memberships easy to find
  • A project list by town and roof type, with photos
  • A plain explanation of your written proposals
  • A price range or a note on how you price
  • Reviews that name the job, with replies
